The most important item in the spiritual toolbox is faith. Faith is how we fix the wilderness. Faith is the implement we choose to mend our minds and restore healing in our lives. Faith eases our worries. Faith reminds us that we are never alone and that nothing is ever beyond repair.
Faith assures us that we cannot see the complete picture. It suggests we relax, sink into the will of God and get comfortable. Faith says, trust me. Faith can see all the cards and knows how to win the game.
Having faith means surrender. It is admitting that we don’t know what is best. Faith requires spending time with God, sharing our fears, but also listening. Sometimes God’s voice is a whisper. A line in a book or the casual comment of a stranger gives us the insight we need to solve a problem. We have to be ready, mindful and capable of discernment.
Sometimes we have been in the wilderness so long that we become inured to chaos and hurt. Pain is habitual, our way of life. The wilderness becomes so ingrained that we have to be shaken, jolted back into our senses. Often, we will experience a series of calamities so earth-shaking that we finally concede that there has got to be a better way. The wilderness becomes so impenetrable that we have to turn around and find another road.
Faith meets us there. We start to get acquainted. Relying on faith is awkward at first but gets more comfortable as we learn to trust. Faith forms the relationship and soon we are inseparable. When the wilderness arises, faith assures us. Faith whispers, be still, listen and have confidence. Relinquish control because you are in God’s hands. Relax and rely on the gift of God’s vision.
